How do you find that perfect bra? It usually takes time and money. But Plums Lingerie have made it a little easier for you as we embark on a series of interviews from women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds. It won’t cost you a dime, only 5 minutes of your time to read our blog.
First up is 29 year old London accountant Tammy Bessinger (size 36E) who will share her top tips in hunting for those perfect bras.
What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a big chested woman?
It’s actually easy. Retailers like Marks and Spencer go all the way up to G-H. But the main retailer doesn’t think about adapting it once you get over a certain bra size, whereas your boutique retailers definitely do.
What have you found to be the best brands for your lingerie needs?
Now you’re asking! Panache, Fantasie and Freya those are the main brands that come to mind.
Do you find that there is a good range of sexy underwear for larger sizes?
Yes. It depends what you’re looking for. If it’s corsets and stuff like that, that’s a battle.
Once you’ve found a good brand to wear, how likely are you to explore new brands?
Unlikely. You want to stick with what works.
Have you got any tricks you use when selecting your bras? The only trick I do have with main retailer bras, is that they keep the bras padded even for bigger sizes. If you’re wearing a top with buttons, they’ll pop because you’re bigger. I don’t wear padded bras, so that my buttons don’t pop! I’m also constantly pulling my top down, so that the buttons don’t expose the bra.
What do you consider to be a reasonably priced bra?
I would say £30- £40 for something comfortable.
Do you consider your husband when you’re picking a bra?
It depends what the bra’s for. Absolutely for him once in a while I will go slightly higher than my normal range.
What qualities do you look for in a bra?
I don’t want it to be padded, but I still want it to have structure. Double lined material at the bottom, wide strap at the back. I also have to be careful about ‘push’, as I can’t wear low tops without getting ‘Oh My God’ looks from people. It’s very important to get a fitting done and get your breasts sized properly. A lot of retailers do it for free. In the old days it used to be naked and embarrassing, and it’s not like that anymore. It’s very important to get your back the support it needs, you’ve got to have wide back support. They say in a bra that your breast should never ever be lower than midway between your shoulder and your elbow.
And last but not least: what has been your most embarrassing experience when it comes to lingerie?
I was wearing a sundress with a push up bra, and a woman stopped what she was doing and stared at me as if to say ‘Are those for real?’
