Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Carine Gilson RobeAfter two weeks off, LingerieChat is back! The topic of this week’s lingerie chat was designer v. luxury lingerie. This post is a summary of everything we chatted about:

Q1. How would you define designer lingerie?

@LingerieLayla said, “I think where the brand/designs are focused by a specific designer’s vision vs. a team/co.” and @HSNoir said agreed “Lingerie that is sold on the basis of its branding.”

@PlumsLingerie asked “Is it just something will a well known label i.e. Christian Dior?”

@LingerieLayla added answered, “Having worked at lingerie “divisions” of major labels, they are very “trend” and “brand” focused.”

@RosaLingerie said, “A lot of my customers seem to think it is like D&G or other really well known designer.”

@Misstreated_ca added, “Designer lingerie, well known brand, current styles, moderate to more expensive, quality varies.”

@LingerieLayla said, “”designer lingerie” brands tend to be innovative in the field of lingerie, design, color, etc- ie. they take risks” — @PlumsLingerie said she’d take up the notion of risks a little later… (more…)

Dare to Bare?

Taking the underwear as Outwear trend a bit far?

With this onslaught of underwear as outwear if raises the question of how much underwear to we dare to bare.

Is the sight of a strap or a hint of lace now acceptable or even regarded as a bit demure?  Bustiers, basques and bodies are all over the highstreet but however pretty they are they will still raise eyebrows in the office.  So maybe it’s not what you wear but where you wear it.  Marlies Dekkers has built a brand on lingerie that you are meant to show off.  Graphic straps that are designed to peak out of shirts drawing attention to the femininity of the wearer while not being overtly girly.  Her designs have found favour with the US celebs including Britney, Rihanna and Katy Perry.  Her lingerie has also been featured in the latest Sex and the City movie.

But what about your regular lingerie, those comfortable t-shirt bras or pretty lacy numbers?  If a piece isn’t designed to be shown should it be hidden away?  Personally I am from the old school, a tiny flash by accident is okay but showing off your washed out grey straps under your vest tops is never a good look. So you will see me proudly showing off my Marlies Dekkers but my pretty lacy Marie Jo Jane will stay hidden.
